About
Cohort Capital was founded by a group of DU MBA alumni who came together in 2012 to find and fund great opportunities. Although we source our deal-flow from across the country, we have a deep love for Denver and the region’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. We believe the city is poised to become one of the country’s top regions for start-up activity and are excited to play a part. While our city has no shortage of nationally recognized incubator programs and co-working spaces the funding for companies in this stage remains disjointed and challenging for entrepreneurs to find locally. Cohort Capital exists to help fill the funding gap between Seed and Series A with the purpose of then participating in the highly competitive Series A round for successful companies.

Stage
We make initial investments at the “Seed Stage.” Although what a Seed Stage company is varies dramatically, a typical investment for Cohort has been able to create some level of minimum viable product which means we can see proof of concept, whether it’s beta software, a first paying customer, or the prototype widget. Our goal is help companies improve their businesses, and to offer advice where appropriate, but to support and enable each CEO to grow his or her business. Our focus is on helping those companies refine their business, make critical hires, pivot when necessary and to grow the metrics needed to raise their first institutional round of venture capital.
Geography
We are a Colorado centric fund, that seeks to fuel the innovation economy in Colorado. Our primary focus has been, and will continue to be in companies that seek to build and grow their businesses in Colorado and who also want to give back to this community. Given that Cohort was born from our graduate school roots at DU & CU, we remain committed to this geography. However, we by no means limit ourselves to only Colorado opportunities. We always have room in our portfolio for great teams building innovative companies regardless of where they are, we just might need the right introduction to get the process started.
Themes
We tend to focus on technology, consumer web, enterprise software, and SaaS companies, but our investment thesis is to seek out great companies that we can help make better regardless of industry. Our goal is to partner with great teams to build their compelling ideas into successful businesses.
